Marble is one of those materials that most easily enchant anyone. No matter what environment, whether it is on the floor, on the walls or on a bench, it always steals the spotlight.

And the best part is that there are many types of marble, but the differences between them go beyond color. You need to understand its varieties to choose the right type of marble and where it is worth using.

Therefore, in this article I will show you what the difference is from marble to other natural stones, what are the most common types of this beautiful stone and its advantages.

What is the difference between marble and other natural stones

To the naked eye it may appear that marble is exactly like other natural stones, such as granite. In addition, there are already synthetic materials that mimic the consistency and appearance of natural stone.

So it can be even more complicated to make an accurate assessment just by looking at the stones. But the differences are real and can have a direct impact on your works, that is, it is relevant to know what differentiates marble from other types of stone.

Granite

We don’t need to be very technical here, but the fact is that both marble and granite are natural stones, but of different formations. The biggest differences are:

  • Texture : marble has vein-like marks, while granite is more grainy;
  • Strength : granite is harder and more resistant than marble. But in many cases the strength level of marble will not be an issue;
  • Gloss : marble has less natural shine than granite. Despite this, there are finishing processes that can solve this;
  • Porosity : marble is more porous than granite and absorbs more moisture. Without proper care, this can cause stains on the stone in case of constant contact with water.

Synthetic stones

Unlike granite, which is also natural, there are synthetic varieties that face marble. As they are not of nature, their manufacturing process has a larger scale and, therefore, they are cheaper.

Despite this, they lack the charm and originality of legitimate marble stone. Because of this, they do not value the property in the same way that the original piece does.

5 most common types of marble

Is marble all the same? The simple answer is, no. Although the characteristics of the stone are almost the same, there are important variations to consider. Here are the main types of the market:

1. White Carrara

Of Italian origin, this stone is one of the most desired because of its light colors that give an aspect of nobility to the environment. In addition to the beautiful light color, Carrara is known to have been used in Renaissance works by artists like Michelangelo.

2. Nero

Unlike Carrara, Nero is a very dark piece with white veins that stand out a lot. The origin of Nero marble is Spanish, and as it is very dark it can be ideal for environments that stain more, such as kitchen countertops and bathrooms.

3. Calacatta Oro

Calacatta Oro stone is one of the most valued and, therefore, more expensive due to its clear appearance with gray and golden veins. Thus, it is a stone that is very beautiful in any type of environment, from bathrooms to entrance halls.

4. Travertine

Like Carrara, Travertine is a type of Italian stone. The difference is that it is more common in beige colors, not white. However, like Carrara, Travertine is also very porous, which makes it more suitable for indoor environments that have little contact with water.

5. Piguês

This type is Greek and looks a bit like Carrara, since it is clear and with gray veins. The difference is that it has a more homogeneous appearance, with less veins than Carrara.
